La Liga heavyweights Barcelona are reportedly weighing up the prospect of signing 28-year-old Spanish left-back Alex Moreno from Real Betis.

According to a report by Spanish publication AS, Alex Moreno is the subject of interest from Barcelona over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The 28-year-old left-back is valued at around €4 million by Real Betis.

Alex Moreno spent his formative years with several clubs, including Barcelona, before finally finding a stable footing after joining Rayo Vallecano from Elche in 2016. Following a three-year stint with Los Franjirrojos, the Spanish defender moved to Real Betis in August 2019 and has not looked back since then.

The 28-year-old has been a pivotal figure for Real Betis in the ongoing campaign, having been one of the driving forces in their push for a top-four finish. Moreno has four goals and four assists in 35 appearances across all competitions, and his exploits have been noticed by one of the biggest clubs in Europe, Barcelona.

The interest from Barcelona stems from the inconsistencies of Jordi Alba in the last couple of years. The veteran Spanish left-back has blown hot and cold lately, putting Barcelona under increased pressure in both phases of the game.

While Alba has been in decent touch in the last few games, the fact that he is approaching the end of his glittering career will not be lost on Xavi Hernandez. With Alejandro Balde being slow to settle down in the first-team setup at Camp Nou, Barcelona will need to delve into the transfer market for a left-back in the summer transfer window.

Jose Gaya is reportedly Barcelona’s priority target for the upcoming window. But signing the Spanish international will not be an easy task, with Valencia scrambling to retain the services of their club captain. As a result, Barcelona will need to have a contingency plan, bringing Moreno into the picture.

Apart from the 28-year-old Real Betis left-back, Javi Galan, Nicolas Tagliafico and Alejandro Grimaldo are also on Barcelona’s radar as alternatives to Gaya. As for Moreno, Barcelona will only need to pay around €4 million to prise him away from Real Betis, making him an attractive option for the summer transfer window.
