Real Madrid have reportedly identified RB Salzburg midfielder, Mohamed Camara, as an option to provide cover for Casemiro in midfield.

According to a report from Defensa Central, Real Madrid are interested in addressing a major issue in the midfield department by signing a backup for Casemiro in the summer transfer window. And RB Salzburg star Mohamed Camara has been identified as one of the options by the Spanish capital club.

Camara started at AS Real Bamako in his homeland, Mali, before moving to Europe in 2018, when he signed for Austrian outfit FC Liefering. After a short loan spell at TSV Hartberg in 2019, the 22-year-old was signed by RB Salzburg in the summer of the same year. The young midfielder has grown into a mainstay for the Austrian champions over the past couple of years and has made 68 appearances.

Camara has also earned ten caps for the Malian national team. While he may not be the most well-known name going around, the midfielder’s capabilities, which were on display during Salzburg’s Champions League Round of 16 tie against Bayern Munich, have seemingly caught the attention of Real Madrid ahead of the summer transfer window.

Real Madrid are targeting a revamp of their midfield department this summer as they look to put a succession plan in place for the ageing trio of Luka Modric, Casemiro and Toni Kroos. The defensive midfield position, in particular, is being focused on considering that Los Blancos do not have a natural cover for Casemiro.

Indeed, the Brazilian is currently one of the most overused players in the Real Madrid squad, and signs of fatigue have shown this season, with the 30-year-old suffering a slight dip in form.

Furthermore, recent reports have indicated that Casemiro could be a transfer target for Serie A giants Juventus, who are willing to splash €40 million for the midfielder. As a result, Real Madrid are interested in shoring up their options in the holding midfield area in the upcoming transfer window.

A move for Wolves star Ruben Neves has been mooted of late. At the same time, Aurelien Tchouameni of AS Monaco is also linked heavily with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu. Now, Mohamed Camara, too, has popped up on the radars of the current La Liga leaders as an option to reinforce their midfield.

Still a relatively unknown quantity, Camara has shown plenty of potential with Salzburg. And he could be a solid understudy for Casemiro, providing backup and learning the trade from the Brazilian before taking over the mantle a few years down the line. Whether Real Madrid act on their interest in the 22-year-old or go after other options remains to be seen.
