Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire were extremely poor as Manchester United were humiliated 6-1 by former manager Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham side.

Things started off brilliantly for Manchester United as Bruno Fernandes put them ahead in the second minute from the penalty spot after Anthony Martial was fouled. However, it all went downhill from that point on as Tottenham tore the home side apart.

Tanguy Ndombele pulled one back for Jose Mourinho’s team two minutes later, before Son Heung-min put them in front. There was controversy close to the half-hour mark as Martial was shown a red card for lashing out at Erik Lamela, even though it appeared that the Argentine had hit him prior to that.

Harry Kane and made it 3-1 for Tottenham soon after before Son got his second of the evening getting on the end of a Serge Aurier pass. Early into the second period, the Ivorian got on the scoresheet and Kane then dispatched his second of the evening, from the penalty spot this time after Paul Pogba had fouled Ben Davies in the box.

It was one of Manchester United’s most embarrassing defeats of all time. This was the first time ever that they conceded four goals in the first half of a Premier League game and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will definitely be under the pump after this display. Here’s how we rated the performances of the United stars on Sunday.

David de Gea: 3/10

Didn’t exactly make any mistakes for any of Tottenham’s goals although his organisational skills need to be called into question. One could also argue he could have done better for two of the six goals by charging out from his line. Has now failed to save 20 penalties in a row in the Premier League since he denied Leighton Baines way back in October 2014. Dean Henderson needs to start.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 3/10

The Englishman has looked off the pace since the new season began and it was no different on Sunday evening. Struggled to cope with the intensity and movement of the brilliant Son Heung-min for most of the game, while offering little going forward when United had the ball. Did make the most number of tackles (5), but poor in general.

Eric Bailly: 2/10

Deserved a starting berth and looked decent in the early exchanges making a couple of important blocks. But was culpable for Tottenham’s third with a poor pass that fell right to Kane and never recovered from that moment as he found it impossible to contain the threat of Son and Kane.

Harry Maguire: 1/10

A performance unworthy of a Manchester United shirt, let alone the captain’s armband. On days like these, fans are forced to question the club’s decision of making Harry Maguire the world’s most expensive defender by splashing £80 million on him last summer.

Was at fault for Tottenham’s equaliser and then conceded the free-kick from which they scored the second. Should have acted quicker to close Aurier down in the buildup to the fourth goal. Left spaces wide open throughout, which Tottenham capitalised on time and time again. Shambolic.

Luke Shaw: 1/10

Going up against Mourinho, one would believe that Shaw would bring his A-game to try and prove a point to the Portuguese. However, it was the complete opposite on Sunday as the England international put in one of his worst performances in a Manchester United shirt.

Dragged out of position too often, too easily as Tottenham enjoyed a lot of joy down his side – with the fourth and the fifth goals coming from Shaw’s flank. Did little of note with the ball and could have easily been sent off for hacking down Lucas Moura. The news of Alex Telles’ imminent arrival will have come as music to ears of United fans’.

Paul Pogba: 1/10

Preferred over Donny van de Beek in the Premier League once again, Pogba looked casual and disinterested from the start as compatriot Tanguy Ndombele ran all over him in the middle of the park. Lost the ball more times than any Manchester United player on the day (13) and then conceded the penalty for the sixth goal with an unnecessary challenge.

Nemanja Matic: 2/10

A player Mourinho knows so very well, the Portuguese set his team up to prey on the Serbian’s weakness as he coped to struggle with the dynamism and the mobility of the Spurs’ midfield runners. Never came to grips with the pace of the game and was hauled off at half-time.

Mason Greenwood: 3/10

Never really got into the game with the opponents dominating through and through. Did have a shot at goal which went narrowly wide in the first period. Subbed off for the final twenty minutes or so.

Bruno Fernandes: 5/10

Played a role in the lead-up to United’s early penalty and stepped up to dispatch it effortlessly. It was downhill from thereon as he faded out of the game and was subbed off at half-time as Solskjaer looked to beef up his midfield with Fred and Scott McTominay.

Marcus Rashford: 4/10

Struck the woodwork in the first half, although he was flagged offside. Continued to work hard throughout the game, and made some decent runs when United were in possession. All of it was in vain though, as he lacked quality service on the day.

Anthony Martial: 2/10

Won the penalty early in the game, but reacted poorly to Lamela’s antics which resulted in a deserved sending off. Has more red cards (1) this season than he has shots on target (0) in the Premier League. Is now suspended for three games.

Substitutes

Fred: 4/10

Thrown on at half-time for Fernandes as Solskjaer looked to add more bodies in the centre. However, couldn’t turn the tide in his team’s favour.

Scott McTominay: 4/10

Replaced Matic at half-time. Same as Fred, as he failed to improve things in the centre.

Donny van de Beek: 4/10

Replaced Greenwood in the 67th minute. On the periphery during his short time on the pitch.

We can buy all the attacking forces in th world…as long as we have these defenders and midfielders as Pogba…we will not win any silverware anymore.
De Gea, Pogba and Maguire…about 1.000.000 GBP per week…..this complete madness….it is sickening and heartbreaking…those in charge have no idea at all about this game….and still we buy other attacking players…a solid house is based on a good basement structure…
