Barcelona have confirmed that they have appointed Ronald Koeman as their new head coach. The Dutchman replaces Quique Setien, who left the club this week.

Barcelona have made an official statementย to confirm that they have appointed Ronald Koeman as the new first-team boss. The Dutch manager, who has previously enjoyed a glittering stint with the club during his playing days, has signed a two-year deal that will run through to June 30, 2022.

Koeman replaces Quique Setien, who was relieved of his duties as the Barcelona manager earlier this week. That announcement also revealed a major restructuring of the club, with former player and sporting director Eric Abidal also having his contract with Barcelona terminated this week.

Barcelona have indeed been sent into a frenzy ahead of the 2020/21 season, following their bizarre defeat to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League last week. That result also meant that the Blaugrana will finish the current campaign without a trophy and it has created a crisis situation at Camp Nou.

Quique Setien, who was only appointed as the manager at the start of the year, did not even last 12 months in the job, as the players lost faith in his methods. Barcelona have now turned to Koeman, who, before joining the club, had been doing a marvellous job with the Dutch national side and had kicked off a renaissance for theย Oranje.

Koeman’s job would now be to bring the illustrious times back at the club, while also employing a style of play that the fans can associate themselves with. This was something that had been found wanting under both Setien and Ernesto Valverde before Koeman.

Koeman would also hope that his time at Barcelona is much more stable than his last appointment at a club, with his time at Everton having come to an abrupt end in 2017. Nevertheless, it is an uncertain yet exciting time for Barcelona and Koeman, and it remains to be seen how the Dutchman fares at Camp Nou in the upcoming season.
