Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has claimed that he does not see Cristiano Ronaldo sealing a switch to Manchester City due to his ‘great legacy’.

Speaking to reporters, as quoted by The Sun, former Manchester United captain and current Derby County manager Wayne Rooney has expressed his doubts over a potential move to Manchester City for ex-Red Devils teammate Cristiano Ronaldo.

The rumour mill has been absolutely buzzing over the past day about Ronaldo wanting to leave Juventus this summer. And, Manchester City, who are in need of a new centre-forward after their pursuit of Harry Kane led to nowhere, have quickly jumped on the situation, trying to sign the 36-year-old Portuguese international.

Ronaldo achieved legendary status at Manchester United, a club where he burst to stardom and went on to achieve greatness at, before moving to Real Madrid where he achieved stratospheric levels of success.

And having three spent three impactful years in Turin, the Portuguese maverick could be returning to Manchester, albeit to the blue half, with reports claiming that persona terms have already been agreed. Rooney, who formed an iconic partnership with Ronaldo at United, however, is of the belief that his former teammate would not make the switch.

“I have my doubts. Cristiano has a great legacy at United. I don’t think he’s going to move to Manchester City,” he said. However, he did point out that, in the past, United greats like Peter Schmeichel, Andy Cole and Mark Hughes (as a manager), have all spent time with their cross-town rivals.

“Of course in football you never know and in the past Peter Schmeichel went to City, as did Andrew Cole and Mark Hughes was their manager. But I don’t think somebody with Cristiano’s legacy would do that,” Rooney added.

In case Ronaldo does go ahead with a move, it will spark a major controversy, considering how beloved a figure he is among the Manchester United faithful. During his six-year stint at Old Trafford, the Portuguese megastar won three Premier League titles, an FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League, while also winning his first Ballon d’Or while at the Theatre of Dreams.

It now remains to be seen if Rooney’s claims are proven right and Ronaldo decides to snub a move to Manchester City or ends up signing for them in the coming days.
