Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has offered his verdict on the expected newcomer Jadon Sancho.

Speaking to Sky Sports during an interview, Wayne Rooney has hailed Manchester United for their decision to sign Jadon Sancho this summer. The club legend believes that the Red Devils are now in a good position to challenge for the Premier League title next season, reports Goal.

Rooney’s comments came just after Manchester United’s friendly against Derby County, as part of the 2021/22 season preparations. The Rams lost the game 2-1, but their head coach had positive words to say about his former club.

The 35-year-old is no stranger to success himself, as he is recognised as one of the best players to ever play for the club. In fact, the Englishman is United’s all-time top goalscorer with 253 goals in 559 competitive matches. His exploits in front of goal were vital in helping the Red Devils maintain their dominance in English football.

He was also involved in Manchester United’s most recent Premier League triumph in the 2012/13 campaign. It was Sir Alex Ferguson’s last season in charge of the English giants, with the club yet to win the league since.

However, Rooney is optimistic about Manchester United’s chances in the upcoming season, especially after the announcement of Jadon Sancho. “He scores goals, creates goals, so I think it’s a very good signing,” said the Red Devils icon when asked about the English winger.

“I think there will be a lot of pressure, which there should be with Manchester United. Sancho coming in, they are rumoured to be in for a few more players. They are in a period now where the fans will be wanting success, silverware, and Ole and his coaching staff will be under pressure to deliver that,” he added.

Unfortunately, following England’s defeat in Euro 2020 final to Italy, Sancho has been a subject of racist online abuse from fans after he missed a vital penalty in the shootout.

But Rooney is optimistic that the winger will recover mentally and help Manchester United mount a strong challenge for the Premier League title next season. “I think they will be in a place where they really will challenge next season,” said the Derby County manager.

Wayne Rooney is not the only player to hail Jadon Sancho either, with Manchester United captain Harry Maguire also applauding the Englishman earlier this summer.
