Tottenham Hotspur star Emerson Royal has confirmed that Spanish champions Atletico Madrid have shown interest in securing his services.

Speaking  to Cadena SER, Tottenham Hotspur star Emerson Royal has revealed that La Liga giants Atletico Madrid are interested in securing his services.

The Brazilian international moved to North London from Barcelona last summer and has since had mixed fortunes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. With just one goal and assist apiece from 33 appearances in all competitions this season, it is fair to say that Emerson has been underwhelming.

A right-back, he has had his moments for the Lilywhites. However, it has fallen short of expectations, and he is far from a sure starter under Antonio Conte. This is especially telling given that the Italian likes to see his wing-backs perform in an all-action role at both ends of the pitch.

This has done little to ward off Atletico Madrid who remain interested in the player. Emerson has acknowledged the interest from the Spanish giants and has admitted being glad at other teams watching him play.

“Yes, it has come to me that Atlético has been interested in me. But now I’m in a good moment at Tottenham, I don’t know what will happen in the future. I like that the teams are watching my football,” Emerson said.

The 23-year-old went on to add that his current focus is on Tottenham. He did, however, leave the door open for a future switch by claiming that anything could happen down the line. Whether this is a subtle come and get me plea to Diego Simeone’s side remains to be seen.

The defending La Liga champions have had a difficult time defending their crown, and it is clear that some changes need to be made ahead of the 2022/23 campaign. They are yet to replace Kieran Trippier, who joined Newcastle United in January. Whether Emerson can fill the Englishman’s role remains to be seen.

Tottenham, meanwhile, appear open to letting Emerson go. With Matt Doherty raising his levels, Emerson has had to take a backseat in the last few games. Given that his move to England has not exactly taken off, a return to Spain might help him rediscover his form.
