Sir Alex Ferguson has opened up on the Manchester United return of Cristiano Ronaldo, insisting that it would have been unimaginable to see him play for City.

Speaking to ViaPlay, as relayed by the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United legend and former manager Sir Alex Ferguson has given his thoughts on the return of superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 36-year-old Portuguese superstar returned to Old Trafford in a sensational move late in the summer transfer window after it had emerged that he could be headed for local rivals Manchester City. Indeed, talks were said to be in advanced stages between Ronaldo and the Cityzens after he decided to leave Juventus.

However, a late charm offensive, led by Sir Alex himself, ensured that the Manchester United icon returned home to Old Trafford. Speaking on the sensational swoop and his feelings about it, the legendary Scotsman, who played a key role in making Ronaldo the superstar that he is today, said:

“I just couldn’t imagine him playing for Manchester City. A lot of people played their part, and I contributed knowing that, really, Cristiano wanted to come here. That was important. It worked very well. That’s why we had to make steps to make sure he came here. The club then followed in very well, spoke to the Glazers, and it was done.”

Sir Alex Ferguson then went on to share his excitement of watching Ronaldo back in Manchester United colours. Speaking ahead of the game against Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon, the former manager said it was a special day and one which all fans were looking forward to.

“I’m excited, along with everyone else. The anticipation all day, waking up in the morning… I speak for all United supporters [by saying] it’s a great day,” he had said.

And safe to say, Ronaldo made sure that it was indeed a memorable occasion for Sir Alex Ferguson and the thousands in attendance at Old Trafford. The 36-year-old grabbed a double to lead Manchester United to a handsome 4-1 win over Newcastle, sending the Red Devils to the top of the Premier League table.

If this was a sign of things to come, Manchester United will undoubtedly be a force to be reckoned with. And once again, Sir Alex will have played a huge role in any trophy that they might go on to win come the end of the season.
