Sergio Agero has made a claim about the speculation surrounding him following the departure of Lionel Messi, claiming he was never going to leave Barcelona.

In an interview with Catalan outlet RAC 1, as relayed by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Sergio Aguero has opened up about the events surrounding Lionel Messi’s exit from Barcelona. The Argentine forward has said that he would have joined the Blaugrana no matter what, meaning the departure of Messi would not matter for him.

Sergio Aguero returned to La Liga this past summer following the end of a glittering decade-long stint with Manchester City, where he was nothing short of phenomenal. By the time he departed the Etihad, the veteran Argentine forward was the Citizens’ all-time top goalscorer.

The move to Barcelona, meanwhile, has come at a time when he has entered the twilight of his career. At the age of 33, he is closer to the end of his playing days, and the switch to Camp Nou gives him a chance at one final hurrah at a top club in Europe.

However, for a while, it was speculated that Aguero would go on to leave the Catalan club following the shock departure of Lionel Messi. In the end, though, such a move did not come to fruition, with Aguero staying put at Barcelona. And now, he has opened up on those speculations, suggesting he has no regrets over joining the Blaugrana.

Speaking to RAC 1 (h/t Mundo Deportivo), Aguero said, “Yes, without a doubt, I would sign for Barcelona again . For the name of the club there are many players who are willing to give up money to come. And if the club improves financially and does well, I imagine it will reward the youngest. Not me, I already have an age. In whatever situation the club was in, it would have come safely.”

“When the talk with Barcelona came I knew that financially I was not well, but I told my agent that I didn’t care about the money, that I wanted to go to Barcelona. Any player wants to be at Barcelona. When the possibility arose I said that without a doubt I wanted to come and fix it as it was.”

“They invented a clause that I had to leave if Leo wasn’t there . What happened was that suddenly I injured my calf when the presentation was going to be at the Gamper and that was when the rumor came out that I was leaving three days after Messi.”

So, it is clear that Aguero is firmly committed to Barcelona and has no regrets over joining the club despite the departure of Messi. What now remains to be seen is if he can rediscover his best touch at Camp Nou when he finally makes his debut for the club.
