Romelu Lukaku has penned a letter to Inter Milan fans, asking for their forgiveness and pleading them to understand why they left the club.

Chelsea fans may adore Romelu Lukaku, but the same cannot be said of people in Milan. The Inter Milan fanbase remain angry at the Belgian’s abrupt departure when they expected him to continue at the club despite their club’s ongoing financial struggles.

Inter agreed on a £98 million deal with Chelsea to sell their prized asset and ease some financial woes they are plagued by. The Belgian striker helped the side win the Serie A title after 11 years, but his departure has left a bad taste among the supporters.

Inter, reportedly, had to sell their best players to avoid financial complications. They also sold star right-back, Achraf Hakimi, to PSG, while manager Antonio Conte left the side after disagreements with the board over similar matters.

However, with Chelsea looking for a top draw striker in the market, they took the opportunity to sign the Belgian when his availability was obvious. It also offers Lukaku a chance to return to the club he left seven years ago and finish the ‘unfinished business’ he had at Stamford Bridge and the Premier League.

Recently a mural of Lukaku outside the San Siro was defaced as an air of conflict looms over Inter Milan and its board. Fans expressed concern and anger towards the Inter board, and the Lukaku sale angered them even more.

The Belgian, when leaving Milan, had promised he would explain the situation to Inter fans and has now penned an open letter expressing his reasons. Daily Mail published Lukaku’s words from the letter, where the striker asked the fans to understand his choice. Here are excerpts from his full letter.

Lukaku said, “Dear Inter fans, Thank you. Thank you for loving me as one of your own. Thank you for making me and my family feel at home in Milano. Thank you for the unconditional support and love on a daily basis. Thank you for motivating me even more after the first season. When I came to Inter, I immediately felt that I would do well for this club.

“The love and reception I first received at Malpensa airport was the start of a beautiful story. I made it my mission never to let you down every time I wore the Inter shirt. I gave 100% in every training session and every game so that I could make you proud. I hope you guys understand my decision to move on to Chelsea. It’s a chance of a lifetime for me, and I think at this time of my career, it is a chance that I always dreamed of.”
