Rio Ferdinand has heaped praise on former Manchester United forward Romelu Lukaku, who is tipped to rejoin Chelsea.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand has offered his take on Romelu Lukaku amid reports over him returning to Stamford Bridge this summer. The former Manchester United defender has predicted Lukaku to succeed upon his return to the Premier League and prove his doubters wrong in England, reports football.london.

The forward has certainly silenced his critics during his time at Inter Milan, mustering 64 goals and 16 assists in just under 100 competitive appearances. His success was critical to the club’s Scudetto winning campaign last season and the Belgian has evidently improved since his roller-coaster of a stint at Manchester United.

A six-time English champion with Manchester United, Ferdinand himself was well aware of the Belgian’s struggles at Old Trafford. Although the former Chelsea forward did not particularly have a bad scoring record, he was a maligned figure, often due to his lack of technical skill and poor first touch.

However, after two successful years in Italy, Ferdinand believes Lukaku will come back strong. “I’ve spoken to him recently and he’s hungry man. He hasn’t confirmed to me that he’s signing for Chelsea but he just said this season, he’s hungry,” Ferdinand told his FIVE YouTube channel.

“I just think this guy, a lot of greatness comes through having fuel and what I mean by that is having doubters and wanting to prove them wrong,” the Manchester United legend added while opining on Lukaku’s impending move to Chelsea.

Ferdinand further commented on the aforementioned doubters he had after initially leaving Manchester United in the summer of 2019, stating, “He’s got a whole stadium full at Manchester United who doubted him, all the fanbase at Old Trafford doubted him. A lot of people weren’t too dissatisfied when he left.”

“He will be sitting there and looking in the diary to see when that Old Trafford game is and he will want to unload. Romelu Lukaku guarantees you 20 goals, minimum. He guarantees you that. He’s scored goals wherever he’s been, he’s an elite goalscorer, it’s as simple as that.”

It is evident that Chelsea’s pursuit of Lukaku is going to boost their goalscoring prowess, as predicted by Rio Ferdinand. But Manchester United themselves haven’t done much when it comes to improving their ranks in that department, with Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness most recently criticising their transfer policy, urging more investment. As for Lukaku, he is set to rejoin Chelsea, and it will be interesting to see how he fares at the west London club.
