Espanyol striker Raul de Tomas has claimed that he would be excited by the prospect of a potential return to Real Madrid in the summer.

Speaking after Real Madrid’s win over Espanyol in La Liga this past weekend (h/t Defensa Central), Raul de Tomas has opened up on the possibility of a return to the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer transfer window.

De Tomas came through the youth ranks at Real Madrid but never managed to make the grade to the first team. The striker made over 60 appearances for the club’s Castilla outfit and had loan spells at Cordoba, Real Valladolid and Rayo Vallecano (twice) before leaving for Benfica permanently in 2019.

The 27-year-old had a largely forgettable stint in Portugal and returned to Spain in six months, signing for Espanyol in January 2020. He has been a consistent performer for the Catalan outfit ever since, notching up 43 goals and six assists from 86 appearances. De Tomas has had a productive 2021/22 campaign, scoring 15 goals in 31 La Liga matches while he also has registered three assists.

Real Madrid are looking for a backup striker to Karim Benzema for next season, as Mariano Diaz and Luka Jovic are expected to leave the Santiago Bernabeu at the end of the season.

Even though Kylian Mbappe is expected to arrive, Real Madrid need to sign a proper backup striker who can deliver the goods in the absence of the frontline options. De Tomas, thus, has emerged as an option for the newly-crowned Spanish champions

The 27-year-old, who has two caps for the Spain national team, was asked about his stance on a possible return to Real Madrid in the summer. In reply, De Tomas said: “Of course yes. Of course I would be excited. I feel like it’s my home, where I grew up.”

Considering that De Tomas has proven himself in La Liga since arriving at Espanyol a couple of years ago, he can be a reliable option for Carlo Ancelotti as a backup for his ace goalscorer Benzema. And while the 27-year-old has hinted at being open to a return to the Bernabeu, whether he would be willing to settle for a bit-part role remains to be seen.
