Phil Thompson has urged Tottenham to make a deal with Manchester City for Harry Kane and demand the inclusion of Raheem Sterling in part-exchange.

The Harry Kane transfer saga had clouded Tottenham’s summer window. The star striker wants to leave and join Manchester City, but a deal hinges on Spurs chairman Daniel Levy’s approval and a huge £150 million transfer fee.

The Premier League champions have shown no reluctance towards the price tag, although they are awaiting Spurs’ to participate in any discussion over the transfer.

Kane was not included in the matchday squad when Spurs beat Manchester City in north London, as Pep Guardiola’s men fell to Heung-min Son’s solitary strike. Their inability to score against their opponents also highlighted their need for a striker.

Man City started the game with the new £100 million signing, Jack Grealish, but he could not inspire his new team. Guardiola recently attracted criticism for his club’s spending power and duly hit back. He even suggested that his side may not be able to afford a costly striker like Kane, and here they are waiting for Tottenham to commence talks.

They were reportedly readying a £127 million bid for the England captain, although, with three years left on his deal, Spurs have the final say. Manchester City also reportedly saw an offer over £100 million-plus a player rejected earlier in the window by Levy.

Phil Thompson is suggesting maybe Spurs revisit that old bid they rejected from Man City. The Liverpool legend told Spurs should be discussing the deal with the league champions and demand a top-rated player be included.

The Daily Star posted comments from Thompson’s talk with Paddy Power, where he said, “When you see that Jack Grealish has gone from Aston Villa to Manchester City for £100m, the minimum that Daniel Levy and Spurs could accept for Harry Kane now is £125m, in my opinion.

“A player swap and cash could sweeten that deal, but there mightn’t be many Manchester City players who want to move to Spurs? Gabriel Jesus could be one, but would he really fill Spurs’ fans with hope that they’re getting a star player in exchange for losing a 30-goal-a-season striker? I don’t think so!”

“It has to be a player of real stature like Kane to win the fans over and fellow England international Raheem Sterling fits the bill. Any deal involving Sterling would get the Spurs fans’ buzzing and could prove very good business for Daniel Levy as the club look to pay down the stadium costs.”

There could be multiple scenarios here. One would be Sterling accepts a new challenge and moves to Spurs. But why would he move to a club playing in the Europa Conference League, especially after a starring showing for England at the Euros?

The suggestions might be thoughtful but may not sound realistic from Sterling’s point of view. Tottenham might be aware that the England star may not prefer a move to north London, meaning they would go back to demanding cash from Man City if these clubs sit down for discussions over Kane.

Not at all, wouldn’t want him at Spurs.

  2. Tony Rogers says:

Why? Tottenham would not want him also Japhet Tanganga already owns him and Grealish

  3. EmptyHeadedPhil says:

WRONG!! We are not interested in a name, us fans don’t work in media, we want a player who can slot into our squad and help us progress. We don’t need anyone in Sterling’s position. We do need a left footed CB so Laporte would be an option, but given we’re looking to bring in Milenkovic on a bargain deal as he’s only got one year left on his contract, the obvious choice would be Bernardo Silva, quality respected player who we have space for.

  4. Harry says:

Why would we want Sterling when Son is better?

  5. Stuart Babitzki says:

You can keep Stirling thanks. The only player worth considering is Mahrez. But we’ll also take the money thanks.
