Kevin Campbell thinks Newcastle United should sign Divock Origi in the January window for his ability to score plenty of goals.

Newcastle United are expected to have a massive transfer window in January. The cash-rich, Public Investment Fund-owned club are coming into the market with an extensive purse, with players being linked with a move to the club day in day out.

Eddie Howe might be only a few weeks into the job, but he already finds Newcastle in a difficult position. If the Magpies are to continue with their current form, come January, they might not be in a position to recover from the damage and become clear favourites to be relegated from the Premier League.

As things stand, any team with their points tally at this season has never recovered and avoided relegation. Newcastle are already against the odds to do so, with the transfer window their only real hope.

Howe has already drawn up a list of potential players he might want, emphasising signing defenders and strikers. While the defenders have been abysmal this term, Newcastle might need more potency in the forward line. Callum Wilson, Allan Saint-Maximin and Joelinton have been decent, but another striker could be required.

Divock Origi’s name has been mentioned a few times in the past weeks, with the Liverpool striker currently running down his contract. He might seem like an easy target, but Newcastle face the challenge of convincing any potential player to join them amid their tough relegation battle, let alone the Belgian.

Financially, it might be a good deal for the player and Liverpool, who could lose him on a free transfer next summer. However, the Reds could block any move considering Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane will be absent in January as they will travel with their national sides for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Origi will attract plenty of interest, and the Magpies could do with a potent goalscorer of the Belgian’s quality. And Kevin Campbell believes the Liverpool forward will be perfect for Newcastle as he can guarantee goals for the side. Speaking to Football Insider, Campbell thinks he would be a great signing if the Magpies can pull it off.

Campbell said, “Origi can play anywhere across that front line. And one thing he can do is score goals. We’ve seen that. Even when he’s only on the pitch for a few minutes, he’s a goal threat. The fact of the matter is, bringing him in would provide yet another goal threat for Newcastle – and, oh yes, it could be a brilliant signing.”

Whether Newcastle can sign Origi remains to be seen. For now, Origi has emerged as a viable candidate to bolster the Tyneside club’s squad, as they lay down the groundwork for a crucial January transfer window.
