Former Newcastle United midfielder Darren Ambrose has tipped the Magpies to smash the British transfer record by signing Harry Kane.

Newcastle United’s recent takeover continues to allow media and pundits to speculate on their future transfer moves. Players from every corner are linked with the club due to their newfound wealth, and stories continue to pour in. Recently, Rio Ferdinand suggested they sign Raheem Sterling, and now another England star is linked.

Former Newcastle midfielder Darren Ambrose has tipped the Magpies to smash the British transfer record by signing England captain Harry Kane. He believes the Tyneside club might make an offer that Tottenham cannot refuse for the 28-year-old.

Kane was embroiled in a transfer saga between Manchester City and his club Tottenham after chairman Daniel Levy refused to entertain offers from Pep Guardiola’s side. The Premier League champions reportedly went up to £130 million to prise the England captain away, which proved unsuccessful.

It is quite unclear whether Manchester City might come back next summer with an offer, and some reports had suggested Kane might sign a new contract in north London. In any case, Newcastle could probably swoop in for the striker and make a sizeable offer next summer.

Former Magpies midfielder Darren Ambrose has suggested this might be the case and that Newcastle could smash the British transfer record for the striker. TEAMtalk posted quotes from The Sun’s conversation with Ambrose, where he widely tipped the new owners to make Kane their statement signing next summer.

Ambrose said, “What about Harry Kane? Now I say this because are Manchester City or Chelsea going to be paying £100m-£120m in the summer. I don’t think they are. I think [City] went to around £130m this summer, so Newcastle will. They will go £150m-£200m.”

“Say Daniel Levy puts on another ridiculously high transfer fee that nobody else is going to pay, and Newcastle say, ‘OK, there’s £150m’. Who’s got more chance of winning a trophy at the moment? Tottenham or Newcastle right now? Everyone is going to say [Newcastle] now because they’re a project and they’ve got ambition.”

Newcastle do have a lot of money to spend following their takeover. However, it is crucial that they spend it wisely instead of splashing the cash on any and every player they put their finger on, and it remains to be seen if they can efficiently build a squad capable of challenging on all fronts.
