Newcastle United could make a move to re-sign Georginio Wijnaldum from PSG following their mega takeover, claims Kevin Phillips.

Speaking to Football Insider, former Premier League Golden Boot winner Kevin Phillips has made a sensational claim that Newcastle United could launch an attempt to re-sign Georginio Wijnaldum from PSG.

Newcastle are the talk of the town currently in the footballing world following the massive takeover of the club by the Saudi Arabia-backed consortium. Given the funds available at their disposal now, the Magpies are being linked with a host of top quality players ranging from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Donny van de Beek and Kalidou Koulibaly, among others.

Newcastle have also been tipped to make a move for Tottenham Hotspur and England superstar Harry Kane recently. With the speculations that are flying around, former Sunderland striker Phillips has now claimed that the Tynesiders could also go after former Liverpool midfielder Wijnaldum.

The Dutchman spent a season at St. James’ Park after arriving at the club from PSV Eindhoven and enjoyed a solid campaign but Newcastle’s relegation from the Premier League meant he left the club in 2016 to sign for Liverpool. During his time with the Reds, the 30-year-old enjoyed a successful spell, winning the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League in five years.

While he was a mainstay in Jurgen Klopp’s side, Wijnaldum decided to leave Liverpool last summer when his contract ran out. The midfielder secured a free transfer to PSG, but things have not gone well for the Netherlands international in France.

Indeed, he has been unable to establish himself as a regular in the starting XI and admitted to being frustrated over his situation recently. Following that revelation, Phillips has claimed that Newcastle can lure him back to St. James’ Park.

It’s definitely possible,” he told Football Insider. “Of course it is, 100 per cent. “If he is not happy at PSG and he is not playing there’s a deal to be done. Newcastle have the funds to bankroll a deal for him. Let’s be honest, he’d be a serious upgrade on their current midfield. He knows the club, he knows the city. Why not? I think he’d be a great signing.”

While Newcastle do have the financial muscle now to pull off such a deal, whether they can convince Wijnaldum to return to the Premier League will be the big question.
