Noel Whelan has backed Newcastle United to jump ahead of rivals West Ham United in the race for Liverpool defender Nathaniel Phillips in January.

Nathaniel Phillips has cut a frustrated figure at Liverpool despite putting in some impressive performances in the second half of the last season. The central defender covered for the absences of key central defenders the previous term to help the Reds finish in the top four.

While it was clear his playing time could be affected due to the returns of senior figures, the signing of Ibrahima Konate all but ended his chances of regular game-time this term. He was widely expected to leave in the summer but ended up stayed put.

After recently admitting his desire to quit Liverpool in January, Phillips is one of the most sought-after central defenders in the Premier League, chased by several clubs. West Ham are keen on bringing him to London to offset their defensive problems this term, while Newcastle have also entered the race to sign him.

Both clubs are serious options for Phillips to consider, and a decision could be made early in the next window. While Newcastle are embroiled in a relegation battle, West Ham could offer him a competitive atmosphere towards the top end of the table, along with European football.

However, Noel Whelan believes Newcastle will pip West Ham for the defender’s signature in January. Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan suggested Phillips will bring in qualities needed more by the Magpies, which could help them in the relegation battle that lies ahead.

Whelan said, “It’s not just West Ham; look at Newcastle. He could be a potential incoming as well in January. He’d give them that strength in depth in those centre-half positions where they’ve really struggled. He’s an English player who knows the Premier League. Someone that can take on that mantle, has been at a very good club and played the right way.”

As reported recently, Liverpool are seeking at least £15 million for Phillips from interested clubs, as they will not let their talent leave on the cheap. The Hammers might deem the price a bit expensive considering the defender has no prospect of playing at Anfield this season, although Newcastle may not complain about the fee.

It remains to be seen which club Phillips eventually chooses as his next destination to play regular football. The Hammers guarantee him Premier League football next season, whereas the Magpies, on current form, are one of the favourites to get the drop.
