Nemanja Matic insists Manchester United are still in the title race

Nemanja Matic insists there’s no reason to panic as he believes Manchester United are well placed to challenge for the Premier League title.

Manchester United’s season might have started brightly with a 5-1 win over Leeds United on opening day, although things have gone downhill since. With some tough fixtures coming up, concerns have been raised regarding their title credentials, with the team being lacklustre in the past few games.

If the Everton draw at Old Trafford felt morale-sapping, their latest defeat to Leicester City crushed their confidence. The loss also ended their long-running away record of 29-Premier League games.

This match saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his side attract much criticism for their lack of overall effort. The manager highlighted a midfield problem in the team, as rumours started over the manager’s future. Considering they lost this Leicester game, they now have to face some tough fixtures starting with Liverpool at Old Trafford next Sunday.

Their next five games after Sunday are against Tottenham, Man City, Watford, Chelsea and Arsenal. Many of those sides have already faced each other, while Manchester United have met none of them yet. This upcoming run of matches is considered could define the club’s season and the manager’s future.

However, midfielder Nemanja Matic insists there’s no reason for anyone at the club to panic. The Serbian suggests the club are in a healthy position as things stand and very much in the mix for the Premier League title. Speaking to the club’s official website following the loss to Leicester, Matic was in an optimistic mood.

Matic said, “We are sorry for them [the supporters], They support us, especially away [and] they are top. They deserve much, much better than this. We will do our best to make them happy in the future. But we have 14 points – we are still in the title race. We don’t want to give up until the end.”

“Of course, we are disappointed. Everyone is sad; everyone is with their head down at the moment. But when you play for Man United, if you don’t win the game, of course, you are disappointed, but we have to stick together.

“It’s time to stick together, to analyse this game as soon as possible, then to think about the next one, which is in three or four days against a very good side, Atalanta. It’s also going to be hard. We are very disappointed, but I think that, in the future, we will show we are much better than this.

“Every next game is the most important; every next game is a new challenge, an opportunity to show your qualities. We’re going to take responsibility; we’re going to step up and see what we can do. I’m sure that we can do a lot.”
