Noel Whelan has backed Marcus Rashford to succeed at Manchester United under the stewardship of Mauricio Pochettino next season.

Marcus Rashford has endured a fairly disappointing campaign so far. Especially since the appointment of Ralf Rangnick, the Englishman has struggled to establish himself as a first-team regular at Old Trafford, even after the suspension of Mason Greenwood.

The struggling forward has fallen behind Jadon Sancho and even Anthony Elanga in the pecking order and was recently omitted from Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the upcoming international matches. Rashford’s struggles have led to questions over his future at Manchester United, with the player recently being linked with a move to Liverpool and Barcelona.

However, in a recent interview with Football Insider, Noel Whelan has backed Rashford to succeed under the leadership of Mauricio Pochettino if Manchester United appoint the Argentine ahead of the 2022/23 season.

“I could see Pochettino getting the best out of Rashford. He’s the best there is in terms of man-management, in my opinion,” Whelan told Football Insider.

Pochettino is the favourite to replace Ralf Rangnick at the helm at Manchester United in the summer, with the German expected to take up a two-year consultancy role. Whelan,  a former Leeds United striker, believes Pochettino has what it takes to bring the best out of the Englishman as he looks to revive his career under a new coach.

“I don’t think they should be thinking about selling players too quickly. They could get a manager in place who could come in and turn these players’ futures around. I’m sure Rashford will be thinking no further ahead than trying to do his best out on the pitch for Man United.”

“Obviously there are issues, that is highlighted every single week. It’s not just on the training ground – it’s the whole regime. There is lots for Man United to figure out this summer, and lots for them to get right,” he added.

With just four goals in the league this term, Rashford is certainly in desperate need of an upturn in fortunes. But with no international action over the coming week, it will be interesting to see if the 24-year-old can utilise this period to get back into shape and compete with Elanga and Sancho for a place in the starting eleven in April.
