Marcos Alonso hopes new Chelsea midfielder Saul Niguez kickstart his time at the club well and backs him to impact the team.

Chelsea left it late in the transfer window to conclude their incoming business. On deadline day, the Blues signed Saul Niguez on loan from Atletico Madrid to cap off a brilliant window. The midfielder’s move came about after a transfer frenzy in La Liga with multiple moves linked with his move to the Premier League.

In the end, Chelsea got their player, and Saul has already begun his integration with the squad. The new signing recently spoke about how the presence of many Spanish players was a key factor for him before joining the Blues and mentioned Kepa Arrizabalaga’s influence on the move.

With him signing for Chelsea, Saul adds to a growing Spanish contingent at the club alongside Marcos Alonso, Kepa and Cesar Azpilicueta. It sometimes gets difficult for a new signing to adapt to a new system, although it helps greatly to have known faces around to make one comfortable.

Among those present at the club, Marcos Alonso seems to be helping Saul more, as he backs the midfielder to come good for the club this season. Speaking to Chelsea’s official website, the left-back revealed his connection with Saul goes way back during their days at Real Madrid.

Alonso said: “I know Saul from the national team, and also we shared a manager from when we were in the Real Madrid academy. He’s a great player. His conditions are going to be good for the Premier League. He is strong physically, he is very good in the air, and those are things you need when you move to this league.

“He is ready to kick-off, and hopefully, we can take advantage of his qualities, and he will be of great help to the team because it’s going to be a long year, with a lot of competitions.”

Further, when quizzed about how Saul might be settling in and learning to speak English, Alonso had a rather cheeky take on the situation.

He said: “I will do my best! If he learns from Kepa, he is in a bad position! Saul is good fun. I know he likes animals a lot, and he will be a good addition to the changing room.”
