John Barnes thinks Manchester United should sign Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong as the long-term replacement for Paul Pogba, who could leave Old Trafford.

Manchester United’s rocky start to the season may be behind them after interim boss Ralf Rangnick’s arrival. While their on-field problems may have taken a pause, there are still issues to be resolved behind the scenes, most notably the future of Paul Pogba.

The Frenchman’s contractual situation is beginning to unravel at the club, as the midfielder looks destined to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season. Former left-back Patrice Evra insisted Pogba could have a future left at the club, but his agent Mino Raiola seems keen to see the midfielder leave the Premier League side.

John Barnes, via the Mirror, insisted Manchester United will have to sign a suitable replacement for Pogba if he leaves. According to him, Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong could be the perfect successor for the Frenchman at the club, as the Netherlands international could reportedly be available for transfer.

Barnes said, “Frenkie de Jong would be a brilliant signing for Manchester United. It looks like Paul Pogba is on his way out of the club so bringing in a replacement for him is very important.”

“Especially if that person is a young and talented player who will get the opportunity to be one of the main players at the club. He has everything in terms of passing range, intensity and a great attitude. It’s exactly what Manchester United need in midfield,” he added.

As things stand, de Jong’s future at Barcelona remains in doubt, as new manager, Xavi Hernandez, reportedly does not favour him in the team. Naturally, when such news breaks out, there will be massive interest, andaManchester United are reportedly keen on signing the former Ajax midfielder.

Despite playing regularly for Barcelona this season, de Jong’s future at Camp Nou remains a question mark. With Gavi, Nico Gonzalez and Sergio Busquets nailing down their starting berths, the Dutchman could find himself out of the lineup once Pedri returns from injury. Furthermore, with the club’s financial issues, a big offer could tempt them into cashing in on the 24-year-old.

Barcelona reportedly want €90 million for the midfielder, and Premier League sides, including Manchester United, Manchester City or Liverpool, can afford the price tag. However, the big question here is, whether de Jong represents the best possible replacement for Pogba if the Frenchman leaves Old Trafford next summer.
