Manchester United have been urged to get rid of misfiring striker Anthony Martial at any cost in the January transfer window by Frank McAvennie.

Speaking to Football Insider, former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie has called upon Manchester United to part ways with Anthony Martial in the upcoming transfer window ‘at any cost’.

Martial has been with Manchester United for over six years now, having arrived in 2015 from AS Monaco as the most expensive teenager at the time. While he has shown glimpses of his quality every now and then, the Frenchman has failed to perform consistently, which has meant that he has been in and out of the team throughout his stint at Old Trafford.

At 26, though, he has reached a point in his career that he wishes to be playing regularly and has asked Manchester United to sanction an exit in the January transfer window ahead of the World Cup year.

Now, McAvennie has insisted that it is time for Manchester United to cut ties with the former AS Monaco man and sell him at any cost before the mid-season trading period closes.

“He’s never done that much, has he?” McAvennie told Football Insider, “I seem to remember him having a really good season in his early days there, but that was four or five years ago now. Since then, he’s hardly set the world on fire. I imagine he’s on massive wages, and we all know he cost a fair amount. That’s fine if you are contributing every week and are scoring goals.

“Martial isn’t doing that and hasn’t done it for a long time. If an offer comes in I would let him go, at any cost. On a basic level, you can’t have players who don’t want to be there. It’s a recipe for disaster. Situations like this can turn ugly very quickly and they won’t want that to happen. Martial is earning big money, he wants to leave, he’s not playing, he’s probably upset, you have to let him go,” he added.

In close to 270 appearances for Manchester United, Martial has scored just 79 goals and has set up 50 more for his teammates. The ongoing campaign has seen the 26-year-old find the back of the net just once in ten games across all competitions.

With the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford ahead of him in the pecking order, a parting of ways would be the best option for everyone involved.
