Glen Johnson has urged Manchester United to stay away from Chelsea forward Timo Werner, suggesting both parties are not suited for each other.

Timo Werner continues to grab headlines this season for his profligacy in front of goal. There is a reason why Chelsea’s top scorer this season is a defender, with the former RB Leipzig star remaining in and out of Thomas Tuchel’s lineups.

Speculation never seems to stop around Werner, and his struggles this season have constantly thrown his name as a target for other rival clubs. Chelsea were reportedly ready to reject an approach from Barcelona, despite a lack of clarity over how the Catalans were going to finance the deal, in the middle of the club’s worst economic crisis.

Manchester United are also linked with a move, and it is quite unclear why Chelsea might want to sell him to one of their domestic rivals. However, the connection is built around Ralf Rangnick liking the former Leipzig player. It is not that the Red Devils lack a bonafide goalscorer, as they have formidable stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani, and Mason Greenwood.

Moreover, media reports from recent weeks suggested Werner might be open to a move to Manchester United, who may not have a problem shelling out the necessary funds for the Chelsea forward. However, some suggest the Red Devils should steer clear of a move for Werner.

Former Liverpool full-back Glen Johnson certainly believes both parties should stay away from each other and avoid a possible transfer. As quoted by Daily Mirror, the former Chelsea defender stated Werner is not suited to play for Manchester United.

Johnson said, “I don’t think that’s a good move for either party, to be honest. I don’t think it’s a good move for Manchester United, and I don’t think it’s a good move for Timo Werner. United seem to want to sign any player available in that position which is just madness.”

“For me, they signed Jadon Sancho for a position they didn’t need, and they’ve got [Cristiano] Ronaldo, [Mason] Greenwood and [Edinson] Cavani. They clearly can’t play all these players and keep them all happy,” said the former Chelsea and Liverpool defender.

Despite all the criticism, the German international has scored five goals in 13 appearances across all competitions and has found the back of the net more often than any other Chelsea player since he joined the club. However, now that Romelu Lukaku is back from his injury, there is less chance of Werner starting games week in week out, although he could be a valuable option off the bench.
