Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has told Manchester United to appoint Mauricio Pochettino over Thomas Tuchel, suggesting the Argentine has gained experience at PSG.

Mauricio Pochettino has long been linked with the Manchester United manager’s position and was the favourite to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer when the Norwegian was sacked in 2021. Some have claimed the Argentine is the perfect candidate for the Old Trafford job, although his contract at PSG restricted such a sudden move.

With PSG failing to deliver in the UEFA Champions League yet again, Pochettino could consider returning to England, with Manchester United reportedly still his likely destination.

However, amid the ongoing crisis at Chelsea, Manchester United have also considered poaching Thomas Tuchel and appointing him as their next manager. Bringing in the German manager may prove a complicated affair, considering all the sanctions imposed on Chelsea.

Former Leeds striker turned pundit Noel Whelan thinks that Manchester United should consider appointing Pochettino over Tuchel. He told Football Insider that the Argentine might be a better manager after his time at PSG, suggesting he has more experience handling high-profile players.

Whelan said, “[Pochettino] is fresher, and I think he’s got a man-management skill that might be a little bit better with players. He knows how to handle big players as well; we’ve seen that. We saw the improvement before he got sacked at Tottenham.

“He’s had a couple of years now where he’s worked with some of the best players in the world. They just fell a little bit short that night, as they did as well under Tuchel. They probably have different styles; I think they both do when you look at them.

“I would say the two of them are on par. I think if you’re looking at man-management skills as well, you’re looking at Pochettino. It was proven how much he improved Tottenham during the time he was there.”
