Pep Guardiola has heaped praise on new Manchester City recruit Julian Alvarez, comparing him to Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy.

According to Goal, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was full of praise for Manchester City new boy Julian Alvarez. The youngster has made waves with his performances for South American giants River Plate. His performances caught the attention of City, who moved fast to sign him in the January transfer window.

Alvarez will link up with his teammates at the Etihad in the summer and continue on loan at River Plate until then. Despite not being able to deploy the 22-year-old, Guardiola is satisfied with the transfer dealings and hailed the Alvarez deal as an excellent piece of business. The youngster continues to find the back of the net at River Plate, adding credence to Guardiola’s claims.

“Julian scored three goals in the last game for River Plate and Man City made an incredible deal,” the Manchester City boss said.

The Catalan has coached some of the best players globally, and his assessment of any player is worthy of attention. Guardiola has gone as far as to compare Alvarez to Leicester City star Jamie Vardy. The former England striker is amongst the best strikers in the Premier League when fit, and if Alvarez does follow in his footsteps, the reigning champions will have a real player on their hands.

“He is a player who moves really well,” Guardiola added. “The goals he scores are like Jamie Vardy. We’ll see what happens in the future.”

Given that Manchester City lost Sergio Aguero in the summer and sold Ferran Torres in January, the Sky Blues could do with a reliable scorer to lead the line. Alvarez could prove to be just that and could evolve into a major player in the years to come. The Argentine has received the seal of approval from Aguero, who believes that the young forward can go places.

At 22, the youngster is set to take the next step in his football career and there are few managers better than Guardiola who can help him fulfill his potential.
