Liverpool have been told that they would have benefited immensely from the presence of a striker like Paul Onuachu against Chelsea.

Genk director Dimitri de Conde has said, as quoted by HITC, that Liverpool need a striker like Paul Onuachu to go the next level in matches where there is a lack of space to exploit as they do not have a striker like the 27-year-old Nigerian.

Liverpool saw their 100 percent record at the start of the season ending when they took on Chelsea last weekend. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, with the Reds unable to make good on their numerical advantage, after Reece James was sent off at the stroke of half-time.

The Merseyside giants do lack the presence of a classic number nine and that can hurt them at times, as was visible last season as well, especially with Divock Origi struggling to make an impression following Liverpool’s UEFA Champions League-winning campaign two years ago.

Now, Genk director Dimitri de Conde has come out to say that Liverpool need a striker like Paul Onuachu even if the 27-year-old does not make the cut to start game in game out. The Reds were indeed once linked with the Nigerian striker and de Conde is of the opinion that they could do with someone like him.

“Have you seen Liverpool vs Chelsea? Liverpool have top forwards, but none with the profile of Onuachu. He would have scored against ten men. I’m not saying that Paul would complete 90 minutes every week at Liverpool, but a club like that could really use him.”

Whether Onuachu could have made a difference against Chelsea is mere speculation now, but it does go without saying that having a different dynamic in attack could have helped Liverpool, who were just unable to slice open a stubborn Blues’ defence.

Meanwhile, Liverpool were not the only club to have shown an interest in Onuachu, with the likes of Arsenal and West Ham United also having him monitored closely without really launching the offensive for him. As per de Conde, though, Liverpool are a club who ought to have launched the offensive for him, and it remains to be seen if they reignite their interest anytime soon.
