Kevin Phillips expects Liverpool to reignite their long-standing interest in Ismaila Sarr in the January window to improve their attacking options.

Liverpool have started their season in style and sit on top of the Premier League table, holding a one-point advantage over second-placed Manchester City. The Reds are also the only unbeaten side remaining in the league as all their rivals having tasted defeat in one of the six matchdays played so far.

Klopp’s team have been the most prolific Premier League team so far, finding the net 15 times in six games. Yet, Liverpool were looking for an attacker in the previous window to improve their options in the final third. One of the long term targets for that position has been Watford’s, Ismaila Sarr.

The Senegal international has been on the Reds’ radar ever since starring in his first season at Watford. Liverpool seems to have baulked at his price tag in the subsequent windows, while they were prepared to pay significantly during the summer.

In the end, Jurgen Klopp looked satisfied with just the solitary signing of defender Ibrahima Konate and made no further efforts to bring in fresh faces. However, the futures of few forward stars remain uncertain; there might be room for a new addition in the January window.

Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino are deemed surplus to requirements and could be moved on in the winter window. Former striker Kevin Phillips, who spoke to Football Insider, believes there could be a vacancy for Ismaila Sarr, as Liverpool reportedly plans on reigniting their interest in January.

Phillips said, “They might look at him again in January. Yes, Liverpool have players that can step in and do a job but do they have enough options at the top end of the pitch? “[Divock] Origi and [Takumi] Minamino got amongst the goals in midweek, and perhaps that can kickstart both of their seasons.

“Liverpool wants to be challenging this season, though, and I fear they haven’t got the depth in their squad to cope with an injury to Mane or Salah. They might have to dip into the transfer market to bring someone in who is going to give them goals. I don’t know whether [Jurgen] Klopp could rely on Origi and Minamino.

“Sarr is certainly a top-quality player, and he would definitely be an upgrade on what Liverpool currently have in reserve.”
