Chelsea lost their second game under Frank Lampard, as they were edged out 5-4 on penalties by Liverpool in their UEFA Super Cup contest in Istanbul.

Chelsea were the dominant side in the first half and deservedly went into the break with a 1-0 lead, after Olivier Giroud finished past Adrian in the 36th minute. Liverpool though, came out all guns blazing after the break and were right back in it as Sadio Mane leveled things up with a scrappy effort capitalising on the confusion in the Chelsea box.

Both teams had chances thereafter, but neither could breach the goal, taking the game into extra-time. Liverpool appeared to have clinched it when Mane got his second of the night with a sumptuous finish, but Jorginho brought Chelsea back into the game with a nerveless penalty, after Adrian was adjudged to have fouled Tammy Abraham in the box.

With the scoreline at 2-2 after 120 minutes of action, penalty shootout ensued. Both teams converted their first four spot-kicks and Mohamed Salah made it 5-4 in favour of Liverpool before the young Tammy Abraham was denied by the outstretched leg of Adrian, handing Liverpool the victory.

It was a tightly-contested encounter in Istanbul, but unfortunately, Frank Lampard and his men could not get over the line. This was the third successive time Chelsea have made it to the UEFA Super Cup and lost, having been beaten before by Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich.

Despite the disappointment of the defeat in an agonizing manner, most Chelsea fans were upbeat and pleased with how the team performed and the way things are shaping up under Lampard.

Tammy Abraham’s penalty proved to be the undoing for Chelsea on the night. And while a large section of the supporters got behind the youngsters, there were plenty who were critical of the striker after missing the spot-kick.
