Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland has been tipped to sign for Real Madrid ahead of Liverpool by former Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

Speaking in an interview, as relayed by MARCA, former Bayern Munich CEO and reputed football figure Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has claimed that he does not see Erling Haaland make the switch to Liverpool but has refused to rule out the possibility of him signing for Real Madrid.

Haaland is currently one of the most in-demand strikers in Europe. The 21-year-old signed for Borussia Dortmund in January last year and has plundered 66 goals in 66 matches across all competitions during his time with the Black and Yellows.

His rapid rise to superstardom has put Haaland on the radars of several top clubs across Europe. Real Madrid have been linked the strongest with a move for the Norwegian international, even though they remain interested in signing Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain as well. Los Blancos president, Florentino Perez, is said to be working out a way for the club to sign both the prolific strikers.

There have been some speculations about Liverpool wanting to sign the Borussia Dortmund goal machine as well, which is understandable considering that Roberto Firmino has not been producing the goods in front of goal for a while now. Furthermore, the Reds’ manager, Jurgen Klopp, has also revealed his admiration for the 21-year-old in the past.

Despite the rumours of interest, Rummenigge is of the opinion that Liverpool are unlikely to sign Haaland, potentially due to the finances that are likely to be involved. However, he does hint that Real Madrid could be where the 21-year-old ends up, with the ex-Bayern Munich CEO even claiming that there is a possibility that the Merengues could end up signing both Haaland and Mbappe.

“Haaland is an investment. I don’t think he will go to Liverpool. With Haaland, I wouldn’t rule out Real Madrid either. Maybe they will dip into their kitty a bit more in the summer and possibly get Haaland and Kylian Mbappe,” Rummenigge said.

Haaland was linked with a host of clubs this summer but a move was made impossible by Dortmund’s massive valuation of him. However, next year will see a €75 million release clause come into effect, making him a reachable target for the big clubs. It will certainly be interesting to see where the 21-year-old ends up or if he decides to stay at Dortmund.
