Manchester United target Leon Goretzka will sign a new contract and stay put at Bayern Munich, believes Die Roten manager Julian Nagelsmann.

Speaking to reporters, as quoted by Goal, new Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann has expressed confidence that midfielder Leon Goretzka will sign a new contract and stay at the club, amid interest from Manchester United.

Goretzka has been a top performer for the record German champions since making the move from Schalke, but his future has been shrouded in uncertainty of late due to a snag in contract negotiations.

The German international’s current deal runs out in less than a year, and with talks going nowhere, there have been speculations that Bayern Munich might cash in on Goretzka, with Manchester United touted as his next destination.

Indeed, the Red Devils are even said to have tabled a contract offer for Goretzka that trumps the terms being proposed by Die Roten. However, Nagelsmann insisted that he was confident that the 26-year-old would extend his stay at the Allianz Arena by penning a new contract.

“I’m not involved enough that I have a say every day. I stay out of these issues. Of course I have talked to him about my plans for him. I’ve told him I’d be happy if he extended and I’m also confident. There are several topics involved when it comes to discussing a contract extension,” Nagelsmann said, speaking after Bayern Munich lost to Napoli in a pre-season friendly encounter.

“I’ll continue to focus on the sports side of things and show him he can be one of the most dangerous midfielders in Europe. He has potential to get even better.”

Manchester United’s interest in Goretzka comes from the uncertain future of Paul Pogba, who, like the German, is in the final year of his contract with the 20-time English champions and is yet to commit to a new contract. Apart from United, Goretzka has attracted interest from La Liga giants Barcelona as well.

But, Nagelsmann, who is in the first few months of his job as the Bayern Munich job, seems confident that the 26-year-old former Schalke ace will pen a new contract and extend his stay with the Bavarian giants.
