Paul Scholes believes midfielder Paul Pogba will stay at the club and renew his contract as he believes this Manchester United team can win silverware.

Manchester United got their season up and running in style. The Red Devils dispatched off Leeds United in scintillating fashion as Bruno Fernandes, and Paul Pogba tore Marcelo Bielsa’s side to shreds. The club also presented new signing Raphael Varane in front of a full capacity Old Trafford audience.

The performance also showed intent from Manchester United to challenge for the Premier League title, and the belief is stronger that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has finally put together the right squad. While the focus remained on the team performances and that of Fernandes; it was Pogba who played a vital role in the victory.

The French midfielder registered four assists on the day, while Fernandes secured the match ball for his scintillating hattrick. But despite all the fanfare around Pogba’s display, his future remains a matter of concern for the Old Trafford faithful, with only a year left on his deal.

There have been no advance movements in renewing his contract up until now, and many rumours circulating about Pogba playing elsewhere next season. Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have been mentioned as possible suitors, while the current season will determine the real outcome of his next destination.

However, former United star Paul Scholes does not want to comment on speculation as he believes Pogba will sign a new contract at the club to commit his long-term future. The former midfielder believes that Solskjaer has the right squad to win titles, and Pogba knows the team’s potential, which will be key to him staying.

Goal.com published quotes from Scholes speaking to Premier League productions, where the pundit remained confident Pogba would stay at Manchester United.

Scholes said, “I think he’ll stay, I think he will. When he was playing a couple of years ago in a team that wasn’t quite functioning as well as this one looks like it might do, and with the amount of attacking players he’s got, the ability he’s got, I think he’ll add a lot to this team.

“I think he’ll end up signing a new contract. If this team carries on in this manner, progressing like it is – I don’t want to get too excited – but it’s a team that can go on and win trophies, and that’s what he wants to do.”

Scholes makes a logical point, given Pogba’s body language does not suggest he is all too keen on leaving the club. However, the next few months and United’s trajectories in the Premier League and Champions League will be instrumental in the midfielder deciding his future. The loyal supporters will be certainly wishing a contract extension at Old Trafford that will seal his long-term future at the club.
