Real Madrid legend Roberto Carlos has backed Manchester United and England left-back Luke Shaw to make it to the top while addressing comparisons between the two.
Speaking to PA Sport, as relayed by the Manchester Evening News, former Real Madrid defender and legend Roberto Carlos has tipped Manchester United star Luke Shaw for big success after his performances at the UEFA Euro 2020.
One of the greatest ever left-backs to ever grace the game of football, Carlos’ words certainly carry a lot of weight. And the Real Madrid and Brazil legend has claimed that Shaw, who has been brilliant over the past few months for club and country, has got everything it takes to make it big in the game.
“You can see he’s very motivated, his performance against Ukraine was very good. He’s been improving each game. I think he’s got everything to get to the top. He’s the left-back for England — that in itself says a lot,” the former Real Madrid superstar said.
These comments come after Shaw’s excellent performances for England in the ongoing UEFA Euro 2020. The left-back has been one of the Three Lions’ best performers as they have made it to the semi-finals. The 25-year-old has assisted three goals so far in the tournament, including two in the 4-0 win over Ukraine in the quarter-finals.
Shaw’s attacking intent and creative flair have led to comparisons with Carlos, with some of his teammates and fans even dubbing him, Shawberto Carlos. When asked about these comparisons, the former Real Madrid defender did not get drawn in but was still effusive in his praise for the Manchester United ace.
“I don’t like comparing. It’s two completely different periods in football. I had my time and now he’s having his. Similarities I think could be that he has strength and the desire to win, just like I did,” Carlos said.
Shaw’s had to take the hard way to the top, after having been blighted by injuries early in his career at Manchester United. His difficult relationship with former manager Jose Mourinho also played a role in his struggles. But the 25-year-old has emerged stronger from all the hardships, becoming the best left-back in the country. He will again have a critical role to play when England face Denmark in the semi-finals.
