Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho was recently asked about the club’s chances of signing Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer.

Speaking to Correspondentes Premier, Fernandinho has recently opened up about Manchester City’s pursuit of Cristiano Ronaldo. The midfielder has offered further insights into the transfer saga and has admitted that there was a possibility of Ronaldo joining Man City in the summer.

The Sky Blues were even labelled as the undisputed favourites to secure the services of the former Juventus forward once, before their cross-town rivals Manchester United eventually swooped in and hijacked the deal, completing a sensational return to Old Trafford for the Portuguese international.

Manchester City have remained coy about the whole transfer saga so far, but one of their midfielder in Fernandinho was recently asked about the club’s failed pursuit of Ronaldo in the Correspondentes Premier, which is a show held by Brazilian journalists living in England.

Sport Witness has recently published the excerpts of his interview, where the veteran midfielder offered some useful insights in Ronaldo’s transfer situation while acknowledging Man City’s involvement in the race.

“I think there was a chance, yes, good, considerable. I think there were even a few conversations,” said Fernandinho. “Also because his agent was here at the club renewing Ederson’s contract, Ruben Dias’ contract, seeing the situation of Bernardo Silva and João Cancelo as well. So obviously if you’re there at the table, you can talk about everything and every possible player.”

Fernandinho later opened up on the deal collapsing and how that they have affected Man City’s own sets of supporters. “But I think that a lot of expectations were also raised with the possibility of him coming here.

“Without a doubt, this ends up affecting not only the fans, but affected also the people inside the club. But in the end things didn’t work out, he didn’t close the deal, and ended up going to the red side of town then. Life goes on,” the midfielder added.

Despite the missed pursuit of Ronaldo, however, Fernandinho, who is Manchester City’s club captain and has made over 350 competitive appearances for the club, remains optimistic that his team have the upper hand over Manchester United, hailing the identity and tactical style Pep Guardiola has introduced to Etihad over the past five years.

The Red Devils, though, have certainly been boosted by the addition of Portuguese international and are currently leading the Premier League table, although their recent defeat to Young Boys in UEFA Champions League was certainly disappointing for the fans.
