Barcelona failed to grab their chance to close the gap on Real Madrid at the top of La Liga after being held to a 1-1 draw by Atletico at the Camp Nou on Wednesday night.

After Real Madrid missed their glorious opportunity to secure a La Liga record 17 consecutive wins and settled for a draw against Villarreal, their respective Clasico and city rivals, Barcelona and Atletico were handed a great chance to close the gap on the Los Blancos at the top.

However, the two Spanish giants played out a draw at the Camp Nou with Angel Correa cancelling out Ivan Rakitic’s first half opener to ensure the Rojiblancos return to the capital with at least a point.

Ivan Rakitic got the proceedings underway towards the end of the 1st half after he found himself at the end of a magisterial cross from Andres Iniesta and duly converted his opportunity to send the Blaugrana ahead on the night. Fans gave the Serbian credit and lauded his penchant for turning up in the big clashes for the Catalans.

Angel Correa, who hails from the same town as Lionel Messi in Argentina, equalized for Atletico in the second half and also went on to deliver a stellar performance coming off the bench on the night, much to the delight of the fans and boss Diego Simeone.

There was more concern for Barcelona as Lionel Messi hobbled off due to an injury and was ruled out for 3 weeks. He could be set for a return against Manchester City in the Champions League.
