Tottenham Hotspur defender Emerson Royal has said he has been left hurt by Barcelona’s decision to sell him in the summer transfer window.

In an interview with Spanish publication MARCA, as quoted by ESPN, Emerson Royal has opened up about the events leading up to his departure from Barcelona. The Brazilian defender, who is now at Tottenham Hotspur, has said that he has been left by the Catalan giants’ decision to part ways with him.

“I thought the club wanted me to stay. I started on Sunday [against Getafe]. Then, the next day I started to see a mountain of things came coming out. That Tottenham were talking with Barcelona, that it was almost done. I didn’t know anything. The club called me to the training ground and that is when I learned they wanted me to go.”

“The directors were all there, telling me the club’s situation wasn’t good, that they were going through a difficult moment and that it was best to accept the offer. I repeated that I wanted to stay because it was my dream to play for Barcelona. I knew I could succeed there if I was at my best. But I’m not stupid and we reached a moment where I realised they were telling me I was going whatever happened.”

“I would not say I feel used, but the way they behaved hurts. There are better ways to do things. When I joined, I was sure they didn’t want to sell me, but seeing what’s happened, I’m certain they had this in mind when they brought me back.”

Barcelona Summer Transfer Window Verdict 2021/22 | THT Opinions

Emerson’s links with Tottenham Hotspur really grew like wildfire in the final days of the summer transfer window. It was initially suggested that the Brazilian defender had absolutely no interest in joining the Premier League heavyweights, as the player himself seems to suggest.

However, in the end, Tottenham ended up swooping him away from Barcelona on Deadline Day in a deal worth around €30 million. Now, while his departure from Barcelona has left a sour taste in his mouth, although it remains to be seen if he can prove the Blaugrana wrong by succeeding at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
