Former German international Dietmar Hamann has backed Liverpool-linked Denis Zakaria to succeed in the Premier League.

Denis Zakaria has become a hot topic in the transfer market lately. With just half a season left until his contract at Borussia Monchengladbach expires, the midfielder has become a top target for major clubs across Europe, including the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund, among many others.

However, recent reports suggest Zakaria favours a move to the Premier League, with Liverpool tipped as a front-runner in the chase. While he is likely to spend the remainder of the campaign at Gladbach, it appears the Swiss international could be the Reds’ star arrival next summer.

Speaking to Tribal Football, former Liverpool star Dietmar Hamann reacted to the speculations regarding Zakaria’s potential move to Anfield. He hailed the player for his impact in the Bundesliga and has backed him to become a success in English football.

“I think his game is definitely suited to the Premier League. I think he could be a player for Liverpool, he’s a player that has a great engine on him and he could play a more defensive role if Fabinho was missing,” said Hamann, who had featured in almost 300 competitive matches during his time at Anfield, notably winning the Champions League alongside Steven Gerrard.

Zakaria has been a star figure in the Bundesliga ever since he joined Gladbach back in 2017. He has featured in 141 competitive matches for the Foals, establishing himself as one of the best players in the team and the heartbeat of the Swiss national side that eclipsed Italy to secure a direct place in next year’s FIFA World Cup.

“He can also play in a more attacking role, so he could be a player that would be a good fit, but he’s definitely someone who could make the move to the Premier League in general,” Hamann added, praising Zakaria’s tactical versatility and overall style of play that should tune in well with Jurgen Klopp’s tactical philosophy at Liverpool.

However, the deal remains far from completed and with still a month left until foreign clubs are eligible to hold talks with Zakaria regarding a pre-contractual agreement, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for the Swiss international.
