Trevor Sinclair has warned David de Gea about his future at Manchester United following the appointment of Ralf Rangnick as interim manager.

Speaking on talkSPORT, as relayed by Mirror, former Manchester City striker Trevor Sinclair has claimed that the arrival of Ralf Rangnick at Manchester United could spell the end of David de Gea’s career at the club.

Manchester United recently appointed Rangnick as the interim manager following the axing of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last month. The German is known for his tactical acumen and for implementing the gegenpressing style of football at teams he manages.

With his appointment, there will certainly be changes to the way things work at Manchester United, and Sinclair believes that it could end up cutting short David de Gea’s career at Old Trafford.

With Ralf [Rangnick] coming in, wanting to play a high line, I think he’s going to have to be sweeper keeper. So De Gea’s time at Man United is probably going to end quite shortly,” the former Manchester City and West Ham United striker said.

De Gea has been at Manchester United since 2011, having arrived from Atletico Madrid. The Spaniard has grown into an icon at the club, having been one of the brightest sparks for the team in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

There had been a major drop in the level of performances from De Gea not long ago, which even resulted in him sharing game-time with Dean Henderson last season. But the Spanish international has been back to somewhere close to his best this season.

Indeed, he has helped Manchester United save or win games single-handedly at times this term, although he was involved in a bit of a gaffe earlier this week against Arsenal. Sinclair was critical of the Spaniard for his actions on the pitch in that moment, saying: “You can get back to your feet, wait for the ball to go out of play, then get the assistance you need medically.

“I can’t believe how lacking in bravery De Gea is. I’m really disappointed, his teammates will be disappointed, the coaching staff and all the fans will be disappointed. Sometimes when you go on the pitch, you’ve got to take a bit of pain – and that wasn’t good enough,” he said.

Rangnick has only arrived at Manchester United and is set to take charge of his first game against Crystal Palace on Sunday. Only time will tell what changes he decides to make to the squad and whether that affects De Gea. For now, the Spaniard will be focusing on bouncing back strongly after what went down against Arsenal.
