Spanish goalkeeping ace David de Gea is optimistic of a successful 2021/22 campaign for Manchester United despite their Carabao Cup ouster.

In an interview with Sky Sports, David de Gea responded to questions about Manchester United’s chances of vying for trophies in the 2021/22 season. The Spanish goalkeeping ace is optimistic about winning the honours, pointing towards the players who have been brought in as well as their form in the Premier League.

Manchester United have made a bright start to their 2021/22 Premier League campaign, winning four of their first five games to sit level on points with fellow table-toppers Chelsea and Liverpool. At the same time, though, their performances in midweek fixtures – the UEFA Champions League and Carabao Cup – have left a fair bit to be desired.

Indeed, the Red Devils were booted out of the EFL Cup earlier this week by West Ham United, who scored the only goal in the game, with the Red Devils appearing to be listless. Despite that, though, Manchester United have been regarded as potential title contenders by some while other pundits have claimed that they will not win big this term.

Now, David de Gea has given his opinion about Manchester United’s chances in the 2021/22 season. In his interview with Sky Sports, the Spaniard has come off as bullish about the Red Devils’ prospects, pointing towards their summer business.

“We signed good players [in the summer] and we already had a good squad. We are there at the top of the league fighting for every game, of course it is hard, it is the best league in the world. Every game is difficult, we want to fight for the big trophies, try to fight for the Premier League, the Champions League, for everything and I think we have the squad and the players and we have the fans with us so it’s amazing.”

“I think the club is in a good point. I think there are top teams fighting for the league, like always in the Premier League. So let’s see what happens, be focused on the next games and just prepare properly and put everything on the pitch and in training. So let’s see, it can be a great year.”

The 30-year-old himself appears to be playing some of his best football in recent years, having been pivotal in their wins early in the season. However, it remains to be seen if de Gea’s optimism ends up being a correct prediction, with Manchester United possibly winning a trophy this season.
