Danny Murphy is surprised with Arsenal for their huge outlay on Aaron Ramsdale, saying the club might have got their priorities wrong.

Arsenal might have started their Premier League campaign on the wrong foot, they have made some significant moves in the transfer market. Although all the incoming players are of a younger variety, the Gunners have spent the most money among other Premier League sides.

Arsenal’s failure to sign experienced players have baffled many, but Mikel Arteta has time and again defended his and the club’s decisions when it comes to player transfers. Many of their big-money transfers have come under scrutiny, especially the Ben White and Aaron Ramsdale deals.

After chasing the former Sheffield United keeper and constant talks with the Blades, both clubs finally agreed to the transfer of Ramsdale, costing the Gunners potentially £30 million.

While the keeper was Arteta’s primary target for the position, he may not be shoehorned as the club’s no.1 immediately. He is expected to play backup to Bernd Leno, at least for the current season. Ramsdale might be bought in to be developed into Arsenal’s No.1 for the future. While there have been some who praised the transfer, some criticised it, including much of the Gunners’ fanbase.

Danny Murphy was among those who questioned the move, saying Arsenal might have got the priorities wrong with the Ramsdale signing. The Daily Mail posted many of Murphy’s quotes, as the former Liverpool midfielder spoke plenty on transfers, including Ramsdale.

Murphy said, “Aaron Ramsdale is decent with his feet. He is also a relatively young goalkeeper who is still learning. “I am surprised, given Arsenal’s limited budget, that they have invested in a goalkeeper because you’d have thought Bernd Leno was going to be their No 1.

“Maybe priority should have been given to other areas of the team. It was only a year ago that they let Emiliano Martinez join Aston Villa. Ramsdale may go straight into the first team because £30m is a significant outlay – but it wasn’t a deal I would have put top of my to-do list.”

It remains to be seen if the young Englishman goes on to replace Leno as the first-choice or continues to second-fiddle to the German international.
