Bixente Lizarazu has warned Paris Saint-Germain that they would be making a “very serious mistake” if they lost Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid.

In an interview with France Info, Bixente Lizarazu has opined on widespread speculation linking Kylian Mbappe with Real Madrid. The 1998 FIFA World Cup winner has said that it will be a “serious management mistake” by Paris Saint-Germain if they lose his compatriot to Real Madrid on a free transfer in the summer transfer window.

Bixente Lizarazu is a legend in his own right, having won the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA Euros with France in 1998. He also enjoyed a terrific spell with Bayern Munich at club level, winning 17 honours with the Bundesliga heavyweights at the peak of his powers.

Like Lizarazu, Mbappe has also won the FIFA World Cup with France while enjoying a solid club career thus far, winning the Ligue 1 title with AS Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain. The 23-year-old’s record with PSG is stunning, as he has a tally of 154 goals and 77 assists in 203 appearances.

But the French giants are in a spot of bother over the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner’s long-term future as he has entered the final six months of his contract. And widespread reports have claimed that he has already reached a pre-contract agreement to join Real Madrid on a Bosman move in the summer transfer window.

Lizarazu has now opined on those rumours, claiming PSG cannot afford to lose Mbappe as a free agent. The former Bayern Munich defender said, “He is an exceptional player, galactic, capable of changing the course of a match on his own. He is the star of PSG this year. There is no debate, he is the absolute star, the one who is above all the others.”

“If he goes to Real Madrid, it will be a serious management mistake by PSG for not having been able to convince him. Losing a player of this profile, of this talent, with his youth, would be a very serious mistake.”

Mbappe came up against Real Madrid earlier this week in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16, scoring the winner and condemning possibly his next club to a 1-0 defeat at Parc des Princes.

After the match, Mbappe was coy on his future, but Real Madrid will believe they will get their man for free in the summer. As for PSG, Les Parisiens will continue scrambling to secure his long-term future.
