Liverpool defender Ben Davies has opened up about his time at Anfield following a loan to Sheffield United in the summer.

As reported by Liverpool Echo, Ben Davies has recently opened up on his time at Anfield. The Liverpool defender has claimed that it was difficult for him to not get any game-time last season while hailing his new club Sheffield United.

Davies’ comments come just a week after the defender sealed a loan exit to Bramall Lane. He was brought in on a season-long loan deal, with the promise of getting regular minutes, which wasn’t possible at Liverpool when they signed him up from Preston North End during the January transfer window.

The 26-year-old joined the club to help Jurgen Klopp combat the defensive crisis. However, he never really managed to get the nod ahead of Ozan Kabak, Nat Phillips or Fabinho. He even failed to make a single appearance for the Reds in any competition.

Liverpool Echo has recently published his quotes from an interview where Davies talks more about his stint at Anfield. “I was becoming aware that I was the fifth or sixth choice to play in the centre of the defence for Liverpool,” he stated.

Davies has indeed fallen behind in the pecking order after the return to full fitness of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez as well as the signing of Ibrahima Konate. A move to Sheffield United, on that note, has been a respite for the former Preston defender. He went on to talk more about his prospects at Bramall Lane while also praising his Liverpool teammates.

“When I joined Sheffield United, with the promise of playing games, it felt like I had finally been mentally released. I feel that just being around top players has improved me. I feel I’ve grown up. It’s helped me settle in quickly at Sheffield United and hopefully, that has shown in the games I’ve played.

“Playing football regularly is the most important thing and that was behind me coming to Sheffield United on loan. For me it’s about enjoying the competitive side of the game again,” he added.

Ben Davies has started his Sheffield United career with two appearances so far, but it remains to be seen whether he can retain his place as the club’s top-choice centre-back throughout the course of the campaign. He would likely be in action when the Blades face Peterborough this coming weekend before they welcome the defender’s former club Preston North End.
