Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez has responded to speculations linking the club with a summer move for Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski.

Speaking ahead of Barcelona’s UEFA Europa League game against Eintracht Frankfurt, manager Xavi Hernandez addressed the rumours that have seen the club get linked with Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich.

The 33-year-old will be entering the final 12 months of his contract with the German champions at the end of the season. And talks over a new deal have not progressed well as the club are reluctant to meet the prolific superstar’s three-year contract demand.

As a result, Lewandowski is reportedly contemplating his future at the Allianz Arena beyond the ongoing campaign. Barcelona have shown a strong interest in signing him up in the upcoming transfer window.

The Catalans are keen on signing a proven goalscorer in the summer to add to their roster. With Martin Braithwaite, Luuk de Jong and Memphis Depay all likely to leave in the summer, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang would be left as the only natural centre-forward in the ranks. And Barcelona are keen on adding another prolific option at the top to help further their rebuilding project under Xavi.

Erling Haaland had been their preferred option for a while. But the Borussia Dortmund superstar could be headed for Manchester City instead, leading to Barcelona focusing their attention on Lewandowski. The 33-year-old is enjoying another stunning season, having already amassed 47 goals in just 41 games across all competitions.

Xavi was asked about the rumours linking his team to the Poland international, to which he replied (h/t Fabrizio Romano), “Lewandowski to Barça? For sure Lewandowski’s a great player but we have to focus on the Europa League game. I can understand your question – but it’s not the right moment to discuss about it.”

Reports have claimed that Barcelona would be willing to pay a transfer fee of around €25-30 million for Lewandowski. But, Bayern Munich are reluctant to let go of their ace goalscorer, as indicated by the comments from club director Oliver Kahn. So, it will be interesting to see how this transfer saga unfurls in the coming weeks.
