Barcelona defender and legend Gerard Pique has responded to questions about whether he would consider playing for arch-rivals Real Madrid.
Speaking on TV channel Antenna 3’s ‘El Hormiguero’ programme (h/t Football Transfers), Barcelona superstar Gerard Pique made his feelings clear about whether he would consider joining hands with the club’s eternal rivals, Real Madrid.
Pique started out at Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy before the turn of the century. The centre-back rose through the ranks at the club and went on to become a part of the B team before leaving for Manchester United in 2004. Four years later, the defender was back at Camp Nou and has since been an ever-present at the heart of the Catalan giants’ backline.
Pique, to date, has amassed 582 appearances for Barca, scoring 52 goals and assisting 13 more. He was an integral part of the success that the Blaugrana achieved under Pep Guardiola and then under Luis Enrique and has continued to be a regular in the side even now despite having turned 34 and being in the twilight of his career.
Tipped for the club presidency in the future, Pique is pretty much synonymous with Barcelona. So, when he was quizzed about what it would take for him to consider joining bitter rivals Real Madrid, his response did not come as a surprise whatsoever.
“It’s absolutely impossible. There’s nothing. I’d rather die than go to Madrid,” the veteran defender answered.
Pique has never been shy of expressing his dislike of Real Madrid or taking a dig at his rivals at any given opportunity. The Barcelona captain was at hand to poke fun at the Spanish capital club this past summer when they missed out on the signing of Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain. Now he also made it very clear as to where he stands about joining Los Blancos.
During the interview, Pique also spoke about former teammate Lionel Messi and his summer transfer to Paris Saint-Germain, stating that it was difficult to see the 34-year-old leave. He also praised the Argentine for his seventh Ballon d’Or victory.
“It was a very hard day. We have shared 16 years of strips together. He’s almost like a brother. It was on a personal level. This year things have not started well because we have lost the best in history. Yesterday he won the Ballon d’Or showing that he is the best in history,” he added.
