Paul Merson thinks Arsenal should go all out and make a massive bid for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, arguing that the Gunners desperately need a focal point.

Everton and England striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been linked with a move to Arsenal. Manager Mikel Arteta has signalled the intent to sign a top forward in the upcoming transfer windows, depending upon the circumstances as some of his existing strikers’ futures remain in major doubt.

Since signing from Sheffield United in a £1.6 million move, Calvert-Lewin has been a revelation at Everton, finishing as one of the best goalscorers last season. He happened to start the current campaign in style, scoring three goals in as many games, only for a thigh injury to disrupt his season. The Englishman has suffered a setback during his recovery. His absence has coincided with the Toffees’ dismal form in the league.

Amid Arsenal’s continued interest, Calvert-Lewin is being mooted to lead Arteta’s forward line next season. The north London side have already been quoted a reported fee of over £60 million to sign the England international, something Arsenal could be willing to pay. A strong end to the season, with a return to European football for next season, could ease negotiations over a transfer.

Former Arsenal star Paul Merson pointed out that Arteta needs a striker to become their focal point. He wants the Gunners to go all-out and submit a massive bid for Calvert-Lewin, as his comments appeared on Football 365 via Sky Sports, as he urged the club to make a move.

While arguing with his colleagues, Merson said, “Arsenal need to go out and buy Calvert-Lewin as soon as he’s fit. Put in a massive bid for him. They need a focal point up front whose good and strong and can hold the ball up.”

In response to the panel, who asked the question as to why would Calvert-Lewin choose Arsenal over staying put at Everton, Merson responded and said, “Everton aren’t bigger than Arsenal. Arsenal are going to finish above them. If Calvert-Lewin goes, they have a chance to get in the top four.”

The 24-year-old has a tally of 56 goals and 16 assists from 176 appearances for Everton so far in his career. He has proven himself to be a reliable goalscorer in the Premier League. What remains to be seen is if Arsenal heed Merson’s advice and move for Calvert-Lewin either in January or at the end of the season.

We don’t want him. They should keep pushing for Vlahovic and in addition, Sterling.
