Mikel Arteta has provided fresh hints regarding an impending departure for Arsenal star Willian before the transfer window closes.

When Arsenal signed Willian last summer on a free transfer, many considered it a wise move. Owing to the player’s experience and the performances for Chelsea the season before, he was considered a quality addition to a relatively young attack line.

Despite finishing as Arsenal’s leading assister in his debut season, Willian has endured a horrible period at the Emirates. The Brazilian was constantly criticised for his lack of game application and failing to provide any significant spark in attack. His poor form also coincided with the club’s bad performances last season as Arsenal finished in 8th position.

However, now the club are understood to take up a new position with Willian and want the player to leave the side. His departure could open up an important squad position, while the club will also save on his massive wages offered on a three-year deal.

A move to Corinthians has been discussed recently, with the Brazilian club reportedly offering Willian a two-year deal. There were suggestions from some corners that Arsenal were expected to cover some of his wages when a move transpires, although those details are still clouded.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have moved on from signing experienced free agents and have resorted to younger talent in this window. Martin Odegaard was their latest signing, joining four other exciting players in different positions.

In his press conference leading up to the Manchester City game, Mikel Arteta shed some light on Willian’s situation at the club. The manager, as usual, gave very little away in terms of actual news but did suggest talks were ongoing with the player’s agent.

Speaking to the media, Arteta talked at length about many things concerning Arsenal. The Metro posted quotes from the Spanish manager regarding Willian.

“We are having some conversations with him and the agent,” said Arteta. “We’re evaluating the position we’re in at the moment.”

Those words do suggest all parties are talking regarding an exit. Arsenal are trying hard to get several players out of the club before the transfer window closes. Eddie Nketiah is one player closer to an exit with Crystal Palace his possible destination. As for Willian, his time with the Gunners could soon be at a closure.
