Ajax manager Erik ten Hag has been left surprised by Manchester United’s decision to stall on a contract offer.
A recent report from Mirror has offered an update on Manchester United’s pursuit of Erik ten Hag. The club’s representatives had met the Ajax manager last week to hold talks over a potential move to Old Trafford in the summer. They were impressed by ten Hag’s commitment towards this new challenge, with the coach himself stating that money won’t be an issue.
However, Manchester United’s decision of not offering a contract to ten Hag has left the Dutchman surprised, especially after his assurances over money not being an issue. The 52-year-old already holds quite a fortune thanks to his family business, which is run by his two brothers.
During his managerial career, ten Hag has not demanded hefty fees, and it was not an exception with Manchester United during the talks last week. Instead of more money, the Dutchman asked for a significant time to help him turn things around, with the help of soon-to-be consultant Ralf Rangnick.
Formerly of Utrecht, ten Hag has enjoyed unprecedented success at Ajax since joining the club at the end of 2017. During his tenure, the team has lifted two Eredivisie titles and is on course to sealing another this season. They also reached the semi-finals of the 2018/19 Champions League campaign.
In addition to success in various competitions, the 52-year-old has developed talents such as Matthijs de Ligt, Frenkie de Jong and Donny van de Beek, a Manchester United player currently on loan at Everton.
Reports suggest van de Beek is keen on sealing a permanent move to Goodison Park in the summer, but he could be compelled to return to Old Trafford if Manchester United end up hiring ten Hag next season.
The Dutchman is undisputedly leading the race to become the next manager for the prestigious outfit. But it appears the club want to hold talks with other candidates for this job, including the likes of Manuel Pellegrini and Ralph Hasenhuttl, before putting money on the table.
So while Erik ten Hag may still become the front-runner, it will be interesting to see how Manchester United plan to approach their quest to appoint a replacement for Rangnick, who is set to become a consultant from next season onwards.
