Marco Asensio is reportedly set to enter talks with Real Madrid over a new long-term contract, with Los Blancos keen to secure his future.

According to a report by Spanish publication AS, securing Marco Asensio’s long-term future is one of Real Madrid’s priorities for the year. The Merengues will soon sit down with the 26-year-old forward to conduct talks over a new contract, with the player also keen on extending his stay at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Marco Asensio has done well to gradually leave his struggles behind in the ongoing campaign. The Spanish international was very inconsistent following his return from a long-term knee injury. He even started the 2021/22 campaign slowly, but has rediscovered his best form in the last few months.

Asensio has a solid record of nine goals and one assist in 28 appearances across all competitions this term. But the 26-year-old’s contract situation has put Real Madrid in a spot of bother, as he has entered the final 18 months of his contract with the club. The issue will become even more complicated if the Merengues do not tie the player down to a new contract before the summer transfer window shuts down.

Asensio, for his part, is keen on extending his stay at the Santiago Bernabeu, as he feels that he still has plenty of room for improvement. Recent reports have even claimed that the Spanish forward is prepared to snub European bigwigs like Arsenal and Liverpool to stay put at Real Madrid.

The 26-year-old also believes that he can succeed at Real Madrid even if Kylian Mbappe joins Los Blancos in the summer transfer window on a free transfer. Mbappe has reportedly reached a pre-contract agreement with Real Madrid and could be the Spanish club’s marquee summer signing.

But the stars could align perfectly for Asensio and Real Madrid, with the Merengues ready to table a new contract to the player. According to AS, the La Liga heavyweights wish to reward their best performers with bumper new contracts, with Eder Militao and Vinicius Jr. also in line to receive new deals.

As for Asensio, Real Madrid and the 26-year-old forward could soon hold talks over a renewal. With both parties ready to extend their union, it might be a matter of when rather than if Asensio signs a new contract.
