Aston Villa are reportedly ready to rival Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign Inter Milan midfielder Arturo Vidal next season.

According to Calciomercato, Arturo Vidal is seemingly becoming a sought-after midfielder in the transfer market. The Chilean’s current contract at Inter Milan expires at the end of the season, making him a potential free agent in the summer. Although Inter have the option to extend his contract by one more year, it is unlikely to be exercised, thus putting numerous clubs on alert.

Tottenham Hotspur are already eyeing a summer move for Vidal, with Antonio Conte reportedly keen on a reunion. However, it appears the Londoners are set to face stiff competition from Premier League rivals Aston Villa in the race to sign the Inter Milan midfielder. The player is also courted by Marseille and Turkish giants Galatasaray.

Vidal has been a part of the Inter Milan setup since the summer of 2020, arriving from Barcelona on a free transfer. In his first season at the club, the midfielder helped the Nerazzurri win the Serie A under the leadership of Antonio Conte. However, the veteran appears to have fallen down the pecking order under new manager Inzaghi, having only made one start in Serie A so far.

Vidal’s struggles, coupled with his expiring contract, have led many to target him in the upcoming summer transfer window. Tottenham remain one of the potential suitors thanks to the influence of Conte and managerial director Fabio Paratici.

However, Aston Villa are prepared to give Spurs a run for their money in the pursuit of the Chilean midfielder next summer. It is no secret that Steven Gerrard is gunning for a new midfielder next season amid the uncertainty over the future of Douglas Luiz.

The Brazilian was notably linked with a January move to Newcastle United, and it won’t be surprising to see the Magpies re-enter the market for the midfielder after the end of the season. It accentuates the need for a new midfielder who can compete with the likes of John McGinn and Jacob Ramsey.

Arturo Vidal, to that end, could prove to be an excellent pick for Aston Villa, given his experience and pedigree at the highest level of football. In addition to his skill and experience on the pitch, the veteran can also offer his leadership while his acquisition could serve as another statement of intent, as the Midlands outfit continue to attract big-name players to the Villa Park.
