Manchester United have reportedly tabled a massive contract offer worth €10 million per year to lure Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo to Old Trafford.
According to El Chiringuito’s Dario Montero on YouTube, Manchester United have upped the ante in their pursuit of Barcelona and Uruguay defender Ronald Araujo. The Red Devils have made a contract proposal to the 22-year-old to convince him to move to England in the summer.
Araujo has made massive strides over the past eighteen months, establishing himself as one of the most reliable young centre-halves in the Spanish top-flight. He has also taken over the mantle of becoming the defensive leader of Xavi Hernandez’s Barcelona side and has been a key figure in their rise to the top four in La Liga.
Araujo’s growth in Spain has not gone unnoticed, with clubs across Europe casting admiring glances towards the Uruguayan international. The situation has become complicated for Barcelona, as the 22-year-old will be entering the final year of his contract at Camp Nou at the end of the season.
Manchester United have emerged as one of his biggest admirers heading into the summer transfer window. The Red Devils spent big to bring in Raphael Varane in the summer, and the Frenchman has fared reasonably well when fit and available. However, he has been lacking a reliable defensive partner at the back.
Victor Lindelof has been blowing hot and cold this season while Harry Maguire has been atrocious, as was evident in the 1-1 draw against Burnley this past Tuesday. With the futures of Phil Jones and Eric Bailly far from secure, it is imperative that the 20-time English champions dip their toes into the transfer market yet again for a new centre-half.
A move for Matthijs de Ligt has been mooted, while Borussia Dortmund’s Manuel Akanji has also emerged as a target recently. But Araujo has been linked with Manchester United for quite some time now and it seems like the Premier League giants have acted on their interest in the Barcelona defender.
As per the update, Manchester United have made a massive contract offer worth €10 million per year to lure Araujo to Old Trafford in the summer. However, Dario Montero went on to add that, as things stand, the 22-year-old is not thinking about leaving the Blaugrana and is keen on continuing his career at Camp Nou by signing a new contract.
So it will be interesting to see if Manchester United decide to up their offer for the Uruguayan international or shift their focus to other targets to reinforce their defence.
