Dele Alli could potentially cost Everton £40 million despite moving to Goodison Park on an initial free transfer on deadline day.

According to Sky Sports, Dele Alli’s move to Everton could cost the club up to £40 million if the midfielder can perform well at Goodison Park. Tottenham allowed the 25-year-old to leave on an initial free transfer, although they could earn a significant sum for the player through performance-related bonuses.

Dele Alli ended a somewhat nightmarish time at Tottenham after moving to Everton on deadline day. The deal went to the wire on Monday night and the player’s entourage and those in charge at Goodison got it over the line in the nick of time.

Everton held an interest in the player throughout this month, as the club looked to move on from the system put in place by former manager Rafael Benitez. They also signed Donny van de Beek on loan from Manchester United, although Alli’s signing is a permanent transfer.

As the deal progressed towards a conclusion on Monday, Newcastle United showed late interest, which briefly threatened to derail the move. However, Everton were able to ward off the Magpies and complete the transfer.

Alli has moved on an initial free transfer from Spurs, although there are potential costs involved for Everton based on his performances at the club. The report claims that the Toffees will have to pay £10 million after the 25-year-old midfielder features in 20 games.

There are other performance-related clauses included in the deal, which could eventually cost Everton close to £40 million. As the contents of the contract are still unclear to the media, it isn’t easy to determine which club got the better deal here. While Everton have not paid anything so far, they appear to be willing to shell out a significant amount in the future if Alli performs as well as he did previously for Spurs.

Alli leaves Tottenham after making 269 senior appearances for the club he joined in 2015 from MK Dons. The midfielder managed 67 goals, including 51 in the Premier League, and played a key role in the side that came close to winning the title under Mauricio Pochettino.

He will be starting a new chapter at Everton, where he signed a two-and-a-half-year deal on Monday night. The 25-year-old will be looking to put his wretched form in recent seasons behind him and resurrect his career at Everton.

I’m sure Everton will happily pay the ten million if Deli Alli helps the club survive in the premiership and prepare for a successful new season. In fact I hope we will eventually have to pay the full £40, he will turn out so good for the club.
